The Ultimate Campfire
Ok, this is absolutely the last post on campfires - even if it is about the Ultimate Campfire.
We absolutely love campfires. So far we have looked at the Dakota Fire Pit including how to dig a pit for a Dakota Fire, the Swedish Fire Torch - one way to keep a single log burning all night, and the All Night Shelter Fire. It does begin to look a bit obsessive doesn’t it?
In out last post we took a look at the self-feeding campfire. That particular video looked at the upside down campfire where all the heavy wood was at the bottom and all the light weight kindling was at the top. The basic idea was the you lit the kindling at the top and the fire very slowly burnt down through the thicker logs below.
As the fire was burning down to reach the fuel the premise is that the fire will burn for longer and doesn’t require any maintenance until the whole pile of wood is consumed. As we commented in the last post - all the videos we saw still showed the whole pile of wood being burnt through in little over an hour. That’s not exactly what we were looking for.
We’ve Found the Best Self Feeding Campfire
Now we may just have found what we are looking for. In this video a fire pit is constructed with a steeply sloping ramp at the back. As the fire burns down in the pit the next log rolls down the ramp and feeds the fire. By having a long enough ramp you can get several logs lined up which will roll-down and feed the fires as each previous log is consumed. At least that is the theory.
Has anyone actually seen one of these work properly?
