How to Make a Swedish Fire Torch Campfire Last all Night

You may never have heard of a Swedish Fire Torch. It’s a way of using a single log as your campfire. The idea is that the log burns from the inside out and, by controlling the amount of air that gets to the fire in the center of the log, you can control how quickly it burns.

While the log is still reasonably solid it forms an excellent, solid base for your kettle and pans. You can do all of your camp cooking on a well constructed swedish torch.

There are lots of videos on youtube that show how to make a swedish fire torch. One very popular video suggests that you need to cut the log with a chain saw. While there are definite advantages to that approach it does mean it is something that you are not likely to have on your weekend camping trip.

As it is, you are going to need a well cut log (and there are thousands of those at every off-track campsite - yeah right), an axe or a log splitter, and some very dry kindling.

One thing we particularly like about this video is the use of a swedish fire steel to ignite the kindling.
