For me, having a campfire is one of the great joys of camping. As winter draws near having a campfire becomes pretty much essential. Trouble is, campfires can take a lot of maintenance if they are to keep you warm all night long.
In the past we have looked at the Swedish Fire Torch - it can last all night but is more suited to cooking than keeping a tent of shelter warm at night.
We have also looked at options for keeping a fire burning all night without any maintenance.
Now, on the theme of keeping campfires burning all night we see the upside down or self-feeding fire.
The concept is that you put all the big logs side by side at the bottom to act as a base. You build subsequent layers at 90 degrees until, at the top, you lay all your small kindling.
The basic idea is to light the kindling at the top first. The fire will then slowly eat it’s way down through the thicker and thicker logs.
Trouble is, we have seen a couple of videos now and all the wood was still burnt within a couple of hours. The videos only show the fire starting in perfectly still conditions. What would happen if there was a decent wind blowing?
