These days the distinction between campers, RVs and Motorhomes is getting ever more unclear. Even top end tents come with plug in facilities and wood burning stoves.
Now, from Slovakia, comes a completely new concept in off-grid living we get the ecocapsule. When we first saw these egg-shaped constructs we were intrigued and immediately thought they were a modern take on a highly compact camper. Turns out they have been designed as fully off-grid homes for up to 2 people.
It seems that the quirky, egg shape is a functional design feature. It makes the inside a little awkward for fittings but it is required, apparently, so that the gutterless rain collection system works well.
Not only does the ecocapsule capture rainwater and dew, it also recycles and can remove 99.99% of all bacteria. Those doors at the end contain all of the water purification technology.
For most people it’s not going to be the water purification that’s going to be most interesting. You can’t look at the EcoCapsule without noticing the attached wind turbine and the roof covered with solar panels.
The designers claim:
“The EcoCapsule merges an energy efficient shape, compact volume and off-grid capabilities with the luxuries of a warm bed, running water and a hot meal.
Even though small in size, each Ecocapsule comfortably houses two adults. Its efficient spatial layout allows you to enjoy convenience of household facilities in off-grid conditions. Built-in kitchenette with running water, toilet and hot shower are luxuries of a hotel room that are now also available in wilderness.
Plenty of storage space also fits all your sport or research equipment.”

All in all it’s a pretty intriguing idea. We can see these cropping up in all sorts of locations in years to come.
