Patagonia is the region that covers pretty much all of the Southern Tip of South America. It runs through both Argentina and Chile.
Covering a land area of over 400,000 square miles Patagonia covers incredible mountain scenery shaped by previous ice ages. The Argentinian side is predominantly mountains with the characteristic granite toothed mountains.
The Chilean side includes one of the World’s driest deserts scattered with petrified tree stumps - testimony to the vastly different landscape that Patagonia used to enjoy.
Many parts of Patagonia are very sparsely populated. While it covers an area comparable to the whole of Chilly it has a population of less than 2m. Most of those are found on the Argentinian side.
For these reasons Patagonia may not be the top of your list of camping destinations. Which, if you are a fan of wilderness camping, is a real shame. Patagonia has an incredibly rich variety of astounding wildlife including puma, rheas, condor, elephant seals, guanaco, armadillos, Patagonian Mara, and, my favorites - penguins.
With over 400 species there is something for everyone.
